We believe that Health Care is a Right!
John's son Michael, age 9, has leukemia. Through his employer they
had some health insurance, but it didn't
cover costs of this serious illness. John worked long day and evening shifts
trying to keep up with the bills,
but was finally forced into Bankruptcy. Michael's school is having fund-raisers
to give them some help.
How can we have a just society where, when you do everything right,
you work hard, and still are forced into bankruptcy because your child has
leukemia?
Our country is in an escalating health care crisis! In almost any other
developed nation, John's family would not face such multiple tragedies. Those
countries have universal health care plans for ALL their citizens. But here,
health care costs are now the principal cause of personal bankruptcies.
The situation gets worse every year! Many more employers are unable
to pay rising health care premiums, and are dropping their insurance plans.
This is leaving One Million more people added to the uninsured every year.
(2000 Census: 44.3 Million uninsured).
There is a solution: CANADIAN-STYLE HEALTH CARE! The U.S. General
Accounting Office, and the Congressional Budget Office, have both reported
that the money saved - in administrative costs alone-would cover ALL of our
nation's uninsured!
Our proposal for universal coverage would replace the "crazy quilt"
mix of private and public plans. That money would go into a trust fund ,
a huge pool, to fund health care for everyone. Now we are spending TWICE
as much as those other countries that cover all of their citizens! And their
health statistics, such as infant mortality, are better than ours!
Wisconsin has often been the leader in Social Justice actions, such
as Workmen's Compensation. NOW we can re-kindle that shining reputation!
We have a health care bill in each house of the State Legislature called
the Wisconsin Health Security Act. It would enroll every resident of the
state, and eliminate all co-pays and deductibles. Everyone would have the
same kind of health care insurance that our legislators - and all state employees
- have. Taxpayers are funding 98% of the bill for this health insurance.
But our legislators will need a strong push from their voters! We can
not continue to let a million more people every year find themselves with
no health insurance! We need to speak up for our families, our friends, our
neighbors, ourselves!
Please join us! Take action now! Call and write your legislators and
the Governor! Support universal health care -- HEALTH CARE IS A RIGHT!
